$4 Billion Industrial Segment Boosts the Indoor Air Market to $6.5 Billion

The sales of filters for indoor air use will exceed $6.5 billion in 2012. Sixty-one percent of the purchases will be by industrial plants compared to 39 percent in the commercial/residential segment. This is the latest forecast in Air Filtration and Purification World Markets published by the McIlvaine Company.

Sales of Filters for Indoor Air Use

($ Millions)

Industry 2012
Bioclean 497
Commercial 1,537
Electronics 629
Metals 1,031
Other Industries 1,515
Power 383
Residential 925
Total 6,518

The biggest single industrial segment is the power industry. The intake air for gas turbines is purified with the same filter types which are used in heating and ventilating systems in industrial plants. Due to the extraction of shale gas and promise of an inexpensive long term supply, the use of gas turbines for power generation is growing robustly. The U.S. and Middle East are the strongest markets.

The electronics industry purchases the high efficiency particulate filters made with micro fiberglass fibers. The semiconductor industry is increasingly concentrated in Asia. Flat panel displays and memory storage are almost exclusively manufactured in Asia. As a result, Asia is the largest purchaser of high efficiency particulate filters.

The U.S. is the largest consumer of residential and commercial filters. Over the years there has been a change in customer preference. The inefficient G1-4 spun glass filters are being supplanted by the more efficient F5-9 filters using synthetic fibers.

The market for efficient filters is being driven by technology developments. Nanofibers can be utilized to provide higher efficiency at comparable energy consumption or lower energy consumption at comparable efficiency. Both particulate and energy efficiency are important enough to substantially influence purchases.

Important trends include:

  • Vertical integration, e.g., equipment supplier Clarcor buying media supplier Transweb
  • Manufacturing expansion in closer proximity to market
  • Use of nanofibers and membranes
  • Combination of particulate filtration and gas adsorption
  • Purchaser preference for higher efficiency
