Homeowners utilize many nonwoven cartridges as well as those made of carbon block. Cartridges are used to purify drinking water and to remove odors from ice making. Commercial buildings, restaurants vending machine operators and other facilities are also using these types of filters.

Industrial applications require a mix of membrane, nonwoven, carbon and other cartridge types. The membrane cartridges are popular in the pharmaceutical and electronics industries. String wound filters are used in the paint industry to purify the product. Since cartridges are disposable, they are selected where the particulate loadings are light and the service life is therefore relatively long.

In the healthcare industry, cartridges purify blood and a number of liquids in addition to water. The power industry uses cartridges in the ultrapure water systems which provide the boiler-feed water. Cartridges follow other filters which capture most of the contaminants. The task of the cartridges is to remove the fine particles which remain. There are a number of large players in the field. Pall and Millipore are large suppliers of membrane and nonwoven cartridges. Kimberly Clark, Fiber Web, 3M, Ahlstrom and Clarcor are all media suppliers. In the case of 3M and Clarcor, they also supply the finished filters.
