The pharmaceutical industry has the highest growth percentage even though the total purchases are less than the semiconductor industry. China accounts for 20 percent of the world’s population but only 1.5 percent of the global drug market. However, this market is growing at more than 20%/yr and is expected to exceed $115 billion in 2015. Many new cleanrooms are under construction. The large international pharmaceutical manufacturers are building plants to supply the domestic and export markets. One strategy is for brand name companies to compete in generics by manufacturing these generic products in China. There are large numbers of cleanrooms in planning and construction to house research efforts of international companies.
