Dry Scrubber Industrial Market to Exceed $500 Million This Year

The market for dry scrubbers applied to industrial processes is projected to exceed $500 million next year and then to grow to double-digit rates over the next five years. This is the forecast by the McIlvaine Company in Scrubber/Adsorber/Biofilter World Markets.

The wet scrubbers now dominate the $6.8 billion market. But new technology promises to change the balance. Dry scrubbers have been used routinely in waste-to-energy plants.  However, they have not been widely used in other industrial applications.

One advancement which will increase the market penetration has been the circulating dry scrubber of CDS. This all dry option competes with spray drier absorbers (SDA) and has one big advantage.  The SDA quantitative removal is limited by acid dew point. Since a slurry is injected and then evaporated, there is a limited amount of slurry which can be utilized without causing condensation of acids in the gas stream.  The CDS relies on separate humidity control. The removal is a function of the solids in suspension. This allows higher quantitative removal of acid gases.

Another innovation has been the development of higher reactive lime sorbents. These sorbents can be used in a third process known as dry sorbent injection of DSI. High acid gas removal can be achieved without the investment of a scrubber.  The sorbent is injected ahead of the fabric filter.

There are more than 600,000 industrial boilers in China that must face new regulations.  Industrial boilers and cement plants in the U.S. are facing stringent air toxic regulations including the reduction of hydrogen chloride emissions.  These two countries will be major purchasers of dry scrubbers over the next five years.
