Modular Cleanrooms in Biopharmaceuticals
This webinar will focus on modular vs other cleanroom options as covered in N6F World Cleanroom MarketsOne of the biggest game changers for cleanroom companies could be a move to closed systems. The terms “single use” and “continuous processing” are used in conjunction with closed systems.  These terms can all be included under “biopharmaceutical manufacturing”.  The advantages over modular cleanrooms with open processing would be: 1.)Higher purity products with much less contamination potential  2.)Less expensive to purchase and operate

However, there are a number of technology hurdles which make it likely that ISO 7 class cleanrooms will continue to play a large role even though there are isolators and restricted access barrier systems utilized in the space.  PODS or pre-fabricated cleanrooms are gaining market share along with modular cleanrooms.

Multiple options to approach a modular cleanroom project will be compared. The end user can deal with a modular room equipment company and contract separately for the construction and installation. Another option is a turnkey purchase with construction from a modular room supplier.  The third option is the use of a consultant or EPC who will supply the modular room and air related components such as HVAC but also the water for injection (WFI) and exhaust systems.  This could be part of a broader scope which includes all the processing systems within the room.

Valve Options in Biopharmaceuticals
The present market for biopharmaceutical valves is in excess of $600 million/yr.  The design of valves must allow cleaning and sanitization between batches or maintenance intervals. Weir-type (as opposed to full bore) diaphragm valves are the mainstay for critical utilities and process applications. Ball valves typically are used for clean steam distribution and supply lines. These valves also are used in chemical and general purpose applications which do not require high levels of sterility or cleanability. The classification of valves and forecasts for each type are included in N028 Industrial Valves: World Market.

Where powders are involved split type butterfly valves allow transfer without exposure to the ambient air. There are valve designs for single use.  This webinar will provide market forecasts and include presentations by valve suppliers. February 6, 2019 - Pump Options in Biopharmaceuticals
The present market for biopharmaceutical pumps is in excess of $450 million/yr.  Pumps are needed to move fluids (e.g., buffer, media, and water for injection) through tubing and deliver them to the process equipment in batch type biopharmaceutical processes. Several types of positive displacement pumps are used, including peristaltic, diaphragm, rotary lobe, and gear pumps. Filtration Challenges in Biopharmaceuticals
Filter manufacturers have been challenged with increasing cell densities, greater expectations for viral clearance, and the desire of biopharmaceutical manufacturers to employ single-use technologies at an increasingly larger scale. They have responded with higher-capacity, higher-performance filters based on new materials, membrane structures, and filter designs.

Protein purification accounts for the largest share of the filtration market, but membrane filters for sterilization represent a fast growing segment.

Centrifuge Options in Biopharmaceuticals
Centrifugation is used in a number of bioprocess applications, including clarification of solutions from hormone, vaccine, and enzyme production; bacterial culture harvest; and concentration and separation of blood fractions as covered in N005 Sedimentation and Centrifugation World Markets. Centrifuges used for such applications are tubular-bowl designs used in low volume processes, decanters used when feed-solids concentrations are high and disc-stack centrifuges. The market for centrifuges will be impacted by the trend to continuous processing and also the trend to single use where there are now centrifuge options. Filtration and Separation IIoT and Remote O&M   The basis for a $350 billion 2030 market is provided.  The broad range of applications as delineated in many market reports is analyzed.  This includes thousands of applications including ones as diverse as vibration monitoring and polymer dosage for centrifuges to filter condition monitoring for stationary IC engines.  Clarcor already provides a total filtration solution package which includes replacing of all filters in a plant as needed. Water & Wastewater IIoT and Remote O&M   Municipal water and wastewater treatment systems are challenged by long pipelines subject to leakage, corrosion, odors, and blockages as well as by maintaining valves and pumps in remote locations. New wireless technologies are already enthusiastically embraced. Mcilvaine provided insights based on several of its services:  North American Wastewater Treatment Facilities and North American Public Water Plants as well as on ongoing private studies on subjects such as aeration compressors.  This market is projected to reach $168 billion in 2030.

Air Pollution Control  The basis for a $60 billion 2030 IIoT forecast is explained. Continuous emissions monitoring systems are now required in many industries in many countries.  Typically minute by minute emissions of each pollutant are transmitted to owners as well as enforcement agencies. Ultrapure Water  Power plants use ultrapure water to make steam, semiconductor manufacturers to wash chips and pharmaceutical manufacturers for making drugs for human injection.  Purifying water to meet these rigid requirements requires complex processes and expensive chemicals.  IIoT and Remote O&M provide the opportunity to better maintain water quality while reducing operating costs.  Since the manufacturing environments are also complex it will be necessary to integrate ultrapure water IIoT with the plant wide IIoT.  Remote monitoring is already routine for gas turbine generation plant operators. So adding ultrapure water is a logical progression. Coal fired and nuclear power plants, chip makers and pharmaceutical producers are going to embrace IIoT and will be expecting the contribution of the Industrial Internet of Wisdom (IIoW) by ultrapure water system and component suppliers.

Treatment Chemicals  Most treatment chemicals suppliers are first of all knowledge and service companies and only secondarily are they suppliers of basic chemicals. With IIoT and Remote O&M these solutions providers can provide better service and reduce the travel and on site costs of their personnel.  Suppliers such as Kurita and Nalco have performance measurement software which allows them to supply the optimum amounts of chemicals. Nalco has a remote control center which operates 24/7. GE water is now part of Suez which has a worldwide remote control center in France. Some of the wastewater treatment suppliers such as Alfa Laval, GEA, and Andritz have optimization systems which need to be integrated with the supply of chemicals. The IIoW (Wisdom) to empower IIoT will turn sensor performance data into action items for treatment chemicals suppliers.  This should result in new chemicals and better tailoring of chemicals to each application.

Mining  The mining IIoT and remote O&M webinar on Thursday revealed a major transition  toward IIoT.  Rio Tinto already has driverless machinery,  trains and vehicles and is developing automated processing plants.  The company envisions the day when nearly all its personnel are in Perth. It says the system will function as if it had a  brain the size of an iron ore province. This brain is comprised of  parts involving knowledge around  every piece of process equipment, pump, valve and fan. It includes the knowledge to best supply chemicals, filter media and other consumables.

Whether it is mining or coal fired power the functioning of the brain will be the key to success.  However, the anatomical differences between Einsteins brain and  that of the village idiot are negligible.  Is it possible that too much confidence is being placed in IIoT and not enough attention is being paid to the Industrial Internet of Wisdom ( IIoW). It is a big step forward to interconnect every sensor but what about interconnecting people.  Whether it is the mining industry or Power there are many thousands of people with unique niche expertise . In our world of silos there is much knowledge about the product and much knowledge about the process to which it will be applied but less knowledge about the optimum use of the product for each specific application.  There is even less knowledge of how a product can shape an application.

Two participants in the webinar on Thursday demonstrated that they are tearing down the silos between product and application.  Howden has complete solutions for mine ventilation. Solenis is using extensive process knowledge to optimize mining processes with their chemicals.

Howden is part of Colfax.  Over the last few decades Howden has acquired one fan company after another to become the worlds largest supplier.  Fans are critical to underground mining operations. Safety depends on minimizing CO levels. However fan energy is an important cost.  With IIoT a system can be designed with air quality and flow  sensors at every critical point in the mining. Multiple fans , each with variable speed drives, can vary the flow to and from  each point in the mine.  The variables caused by entry of vehicles and people can be taken into account in a software program which optimizes energy consumption while keeping  personnel safe and healthy. This system needs the expertise of mining ventilation engineers who thoroughly understand process variables.  So the question is who should put all this together. Cisco Connected Mining has a program but how close is its brain to the Einstein ideal? Howden has lots of fan experience but was not content to be a sub contractor.  It bought a software company (Simsmart) with the mining expertise.  It hired 15 ventilation engineers and has eliminated the silos between product and application. It provides the sensors, the software, the fans, drives and other components and provides an ongoing solution with 24/7 monitoring.

Revenues for the ventilation fans and repair parts over two decades may be X.  The revenue from a smart ventilation solution could be 3X or maybe even  6X. If the profits from fan and part sales are Y, the profits from total solutions could be 6y or even 12Y.

Solenis has made a big commitment to understanding mining processes and developing chemical treatment programs . One example is a gold mining operation in the Western U.S.  A thorough review of the existing process which was plagued with scale deposition led to the recommendation and use of Zalta™ anti scalants.  The downtime was considerably reduced and profits increased by $ 2 million per year.  Solenis recognizes the potential for remote O&M and is well positioned to further leverage its process knowledge for continuous support.

The webinar reviewed the offerings of software, component, chemical and equipment companies.  They included ABB, Andritz, BAGGI , Cisco, Eaton, Emerson,  Evoqua, F.L. Smidth, Grundfos,  Honeywell, Howden, ITT, Kemira, Nalco, Siemens,  Solenis, Source One, Symboticware and Xylem. Each has the opportunity to take a bigger slice of the pie.

Andritz has developed Brainwave for optimizing its flotation and thickening equipment.  Evoqua and Eaton each has a large number of products which if the silos are eliminated will provide.

Source One provides sourcing as a service for a range of components including filters and chemicals.  When all the components are continuously monitored global sourcing will be even more attractrive. However, it would seem that a provider such as Source One has a lot to learn and evaluate if it is going to optimize global sourcing in the IIoT world.

Chemical Manufacturing   This industry transports, mixes, reacts and separates solids, liquids and gases.  Many chemical processes are complex.  Many are variable with different products being manufactured in the same equipment. Semiconductor ManufacturingThe semiconductor industry is already benefiting from IIoT and Remote O&M due to many processes involved in chip manufacture. This webinar will focus on the potential relating to the ultrapure water, gases and liquid chemicals used in the processes, air pollution control, water reuse, and movement of granular materials.  Special valves, pumps, and piping are needed.  IIoT can address challenges in maintaining high purity air in critical areas.  A marketing strategy based on the top 10 semiconductor companies will be outlined.

Food Processing  Nearly 50% of food processors are moving ahead with IIoT.  This webinar covers the potential for IIoT and Remote O&M relative to all the liquids, slurries, gases, water, air, granular solids and resultant products. The potential ranges from the simple temperature measurement of food to the control of forward osmosis systems to reduce alcohol content.  A marketing program based around the 20 largest food companies is also outlined.  ConAgra is used as an example.  This company has IIoT potential not only for plant operations but for the municipal wastewater treatment which it conducts in many of the small towns where it operates.

Nuclear Energy  Most of the combust, flow and treat decisions are made by less than 50 companies.  EDF has more than 75,000 MW of nuclear capacity. Exelon is the U.S. leader with more than 15,000 MW. Exelon’s partnership with GE is taking a vertical and horizontal view fleetwide and across all equipment of the same sort across the fleet.  McIlvaine tracks all nuclear activity on a weekly basis in 41F Utility E-Alert.  The Mcilvaine custom website identifying each of the 5000 critical valves in an Areva design nuclear plant is an example of the contribution of IIoW.  China is leading in new capacity and has recently expanded its plans.  Many of the plant owners also operate other types of power plants.  The purchases of valves, pumps, filters, automation and instrumentation for some of the largest buyers will be revealed.

Combustion Flue Gas Treatment  Sixteen power companies will buy 55 percent of the flue gas treatment systems next year.  The top Waste to Energy system suppliers are building and operating multiple plants. The individual owner purchases of wet systems with lots of pumps and valves and dry systems with pneumatic conveyors and dry solids flow control will be assessed.  The role of catalyst, lime, and ammonia suppliers will be covered. The purchases of instrumentation and reagents will be changed by the trend toward remote O&M. Also the role of user groups and McIlvaine services in creating clear total cost of ownership analyses will be probed.

Refining A small number of companies make the decisions relative to combust, flow and treat purchases for refineries. The refinery IIoT and Remote O&M market will rise from $18 billion in 2018 to more than $36 billion by 2024. Companies building new refineries are well aware of the benefits of using IIoT through pervasive sensing applications.  A typical modern facility will thus have about 50,000 inputs and outputs to and from control and monitoring systems, with all connections made through plant intranets, which replaces the Internet in these IIoT applications. But an older refinery will typically have closer to 20,000 inputs and outputs, with the 30,000 shortfall the root cause of much inefficiency, operational issues and safety incidents.  So, the IIoT potential at existing plants is bigger than for new plants. McIlvaine tracks all refinery projects daily. There are relatively few refining companies. Many of them also own chemical plants and or extract gas and oil.  A marketing program for refining combust, flow, and treat products and services will be discussed.

Shale Oil and Gas  Unlike conventional extraction shale oil and gas involves large numbers of small wells with very complex extraction processes.  This combination makes IIoT and Remote O&M very cost effective. There are also many more combust, flow and treat products and services required. Why should I consider participating in Interwebviews™?

The Industrial Internet of Wisdom (IIoW) will empower IIoT. Interwebviews™ will be as important to IIoW as wireless transmitters are to IIoT.  Interwebviews™ are a foundation of IIoW Decision Systems.  A rule of thumb is at least one Interwebview™ per year for each $1 million in sales.  In the new digital world your client will be watching these through his iPhone and then using the Decision Systems to select bidders and make decisions.

What is an Interwebview™?

Interwebviews™ are hosted discussions with recorded presentations by salesmen or engineers. The recordings are uploaded to YouTube and the McIlvaine Decision Systems as well to the IIoT and other McIlvaine Newsletters.  They can also be linked to the company website.

There are a range of formats available.  The Burns & McDonnell and Sick presentations are power point based.  The Snowpure and Atlas Copco are discussions while explaining the website displays. The Chicago Bridge & Iron (CBI) presentation is in Mandarin with introductions in English. It resulted in one month of meetings with interested Chinese prospect.
