Hot Topic Hour November 12, 2015 to focus on latest issues and innovations in dry scrubbing

The dry scrubbing option is being taken by many operators of power plants, incineratiors, kilns, and furnaces. There are many issues and innovations that need to be addressed by decision makers. These will be summarized and discussed in a 90 minute recorded webinar.
One of the decisions is the type of dry scrubber that is best. Originally SDA was the main option. Now CDS is popular. DSI with the more reactive sorbents has become an option even when higher efficiency is required. The catalytic filter with DSI promises one stop shopping. Combinations such as DSI and SDA are also an option.
The dry scrubber is necessarily part of a multi pollutant removal system that addresses particulate, acid gases, and toxic metals. As a result, the evaluation of the impact of the dry scrubber on the removal pollutants such as mercury is important. The changing regulations in the U.S., China, and the EU all need to be addressed.
Solid waste is an issue. Can the sorbent/acid/ash combination be used as construction materials. What about leaching of toxic metals? The loss of flyash and gypsum revenues need to be evaluated. The benefits of lower water use and elimination of wastewater are also important
There are many process factors. One is the sulfur content of the fuel versus the required efficiency. Another is the temperature of the air leaving the heat exchanger and the potential for DSI ahead of the air heater to allow greater heat recovery.
The discussion will be at a high level. It is hoped that participants avail themselves of the extensive analyses already in Power Plant Air Quality Decisions. Some of these analyses are listed below.

95% SO2 removal with DSI, SDA combination
The EUEC paper by Gerald Hunt of Lhoist demonstrates that with SORBOCAL, a high surface lime hydrate it is possible to achieve 95% SO2 removal with a combination of SDA, Cyclone, DSI, and fabric filter. DSI can be used in varying quantities and locations to achieve the needed SO2 removal to meet MATS and MACT
Jeff described the injection system using a venturi ejector principle to introduce the PAC to the recirculating scrubber slurry.

Regarding the development of the expertise, Joe Riley of BoldEco cited some of the early European work by Solvay and the BoldEco European partner as the first sodium dry scrubber installation.

The Dry Scrubber Hot Topic Hour Webinar on October 23, 2014 contained valuable decisive classifications as well as little known facts and insights. This positive result was the work of some very experienced and knowledgeable individuals.
Mike Widico and Kevin Cosman of KC Cottrell presented a number of positive features about their design. It is compact and even with the cyclone can be fitted into most power plants. Because of the cyclone to capture the calcium sulfate, the downstream precipitator is not contaminated by large quantities of high resistivity dust.
Paul Farber provided a valuable overview with decisive classification of the alternatives. Each of the three options has some advantages and some disadvantages.
Jianchun Wang of Lonjing Environment Technology provided details on the Hangfeng Project. The installation has exceeded the guarantee limits. SO2 removal is 93 percent.
