Most SO2 captured in power plant scrubbers is converted to gypsum using agitators and blowers or compressors to inject air.Component choices for FGD systems in various countries will be reviewed. An analysis of oxidation blower options for FGD with the history in the U.S. and China will be reviewed. The choice between axial and centrifugal fans will be covered.. The tradeoffs are between initial cost and life cycle cost. Some of the less expensive designs consume more energy. There are various options for insuring good contact between the injected air and the slurry. This oxidation process is important due to energy consumption, impact on by-product quality and scaling potential in the scrubber.
