NEWS RELEASE                                   JULY 2011

Scrubber/Adsorber Revenues in East Asia Will Top $2 Billion Next Year

East Asia will be the biggest market in 2012 for scrubbers, adsorbers, absorbers and biofilters.  Revenues will exceed $2.2 billion according to the McIlvaine Company in its continually updated Scrubber /Adsorber World Markets.

Scrubber/Adsorber Market in East Asia, ($ Million)

Absorber          $1,015.8
Adsorber          $   432.2
Biofilter            $    204.8
Dry Scrubber   $   163.4
Particulate       $   338.9
Other                 $     84.1

                          $2,239.2

Absorbers will constitute the largest segment with revenues of over $1 billion. These devices are used to capture acid gases such as SO2, HF, and HCl. Applications include incinerators, steel mills, municipal wastewater plants, chemical plants, refineries and many other industries.  (Absorbers for power plants are included in a separate report.)  Asia is rapidly expanding its basic industries which are the major purchasers of absorbers.

Adsorbers and biofilters are used to remove H2S and volatile organic compounds. They are also used for odor control in food plants and municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Absorbers are widely used in the chemical and petroleum refinery industries.

Dry scrubbers remove acid gases such as HCl. A big application in East Asia is municipal waste incineration. The cement industry is a new market. A recent contract for a new cement plant in East Asia included dry scrubbers to remove the SO2 and HCl.

Particulate scrubbers include low pressure drop spray towers, fluid bed scrubbers, and high pressure drop venturis.  Foundries, mining and pulp mills are some of the biggest purchasers. East Asia uses particulate scrubbers in some applications where other regions have switched to fabric filters. The low cost and simplicity of particulate scrubbers appeals to developing countries. However, these devices are not as efficient as fabric filters.

There are thousands of manufacturers of scrubbers, absorbers, adsorbers and biofilters in Asia. International suppliers compete for larger systems such as sinter plants or waste-to-energy facilities. Absorbers are frequently used following particulate control equipment, so suppliers of baghouses and precipitators are also often suppliers of scrubbers and absorbers.   Particulate scrubbers sometimes precede thermal oxidizers. Most frequently, absorbers follow thermal oxidizers, so many thermal oxidizer companies also supply scrubbers.
