$7.4 Billion Air Filter Market Next Year

Sales of air filters for HVAC in residences, industry, commercial and government facilities will exceed $7.4 billion in 2016.  This is the conclusion of the McIlvaine Company in the continually updated N022 Air Filtration and Purification World Market.

Electronic filters are the smallest segment.  They are used in more expensive residential and commercial buildings.  The low efficiency (G1-4) filters are used as pre-filters as well as final filters.  However, home owners have been upgrading to the more efficient M5-6 filters. In China there is increasing penetration for the high efficiency H10-U17 filters due to the very high levels of pollution in the ambient air.

Gas turbine power plants filter large quantities of ambient air used to provide the mass which drives the turbine. Owners have found that upgrading to the H10-U17 high efficiency filters reduces turbine maintenance and justifies costs several times those of less efficient filters.

There is increasing concern regarding volatile organic compounds (VOCs).  Plastic furniture and utensils can emit low quantities of VOCs.  Due to the relatively closed environments in most buildings, the concentration can exceed healthy levels. Gas phase filters are used to remove these VOCs.  Activated carbon particles can be attached to the particulate filter media for removing modest amounts of VOCs.  For heavier concentrations, a separate carbon bed adsorber is selected.

The growing wealth and ambient pollution in Asia will combine to provide substantial growth in air filtration sales over the next decade.  New technical developments in membranes, nanofibers and adsorbents present high margin opportunities for suppliers.
